Facilities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Visitors
Integrated Sign Language performances at Chickenshed are when the actors sign in character or shadow all the spoken and sung words of the show.
Sign Language Interpreted performances have an interpreter standing in a clearly visible position who interprets the spoken and heard aspects of the show.
Captioning gives deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people access to theatre. At a captioned performance the words are displayed on a screen, placed near the stage or in the set, and can be seen at the same time as they are spoken or sung. Speakers’ names, sound effects and offstage noises are also shown. A trained captioner prepares the script in advance so as to mirror the rhythm and flow of the performance.
Captioning is also helpful for theatre-goers whose first language is not English, anyone who has difficulty following strong accents and students who are studying the text of a play.

Both The Rayne and Studio Theatres are equipped with Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement systems. Headsets can be booked in advance with the Box Office and collected from the Duty Manager at the Front of House Desk.
