Prospective Students

We run three courses at Chickenshed. Each teaches about aspects of the theatre from an inclusive perspective. Please scroll down to find links and more information for each course as well as answers to some questions you may have.

What do you need to know?

Who is it for?
Anyone who wants to study the performing arts in a place where everyone is welcome.

Who are the teachers?
Chickenshed tutors are experienced directors, actors, musicians, dancers and choreographers. Many continue to perform professionally as well as to teach.

What do the courses expect of me?
Commitment and energy, not only to the performing arts but also when you are working with other people.

Where are courses based?
BTEC and Foundation degree students are based predominantly at Chickenshed in Southgate, North London. We have a 280 seat auditorium, a studio theatre, dance studio, fully-equipped recording studio and technical galleries, plus an open air amphitheatre. Students on the BTEC course spend one day a week at Enfield College. Wherever possible, MA students on this distance learning programme are encouraged to attend Chickenshed performances.

How much do courses cost?
There are no tuition fees for the BTEC course for students under the age of 19 at the beginning of the course (unless you are an overseas student). Please contact Enfield College (www.enfield.ac.uk Tel: 0208 443 3434) for up-to-date information on the College registration fee.  For the Foundation degree and MA, tuition fees reflect the Middlesex University standard structure of charges. For up-to-date costs please contact Middlesex University Admissions: (www.mdx.ac.uk Tel: (+44) (0) 208 411 5000)

Am I eligible?
We believe that everyone should be able to access further education. So we have flexible entry requirements. For the BTEC, you need 4 GSCEs Grade C or equivalent. For the Foundation Degree, we request a BTEC National Diploma in a performing arts subject, or successful A-level studies in a range of subjects. For the MA, you need a first degree or equivalent. Please note that for all three courses, a profile of relevant experience, education and training will also be considered in lieu of academic qualifications, via interview process. In addition, you need to demonstrate commitment and the potential to benefit from, and succeed on, any of these demanding courses.

How do I apply?
For more information and an application form for each of our courses, please contact  Zoe Hayes in our Education Department on 0208 351 6161 ext 229 or email ZoeH@Chickenshed.org.uk

Alternatively, you can download a copy of the application form for the BTEC course directly from Enfield College by clicking here.

Summer Schools - a lesser commitment

Chickenshed runs an annual one or two week summer school. ‘Behind the Scenes’ and ‘Up-Front’ at Chickenshed are both designed to give a taster of our work. This is an ideal introduction to pursue graduate and post-graduate level study at Chickenshed, or simply for teachers, directors, actors, or students who wish to deepen their understanding of inclusive theatre. All we ask is that applicants are over 17, and available for the whole one or two week course (completion of ‘Behind the Scenes’ is a pre-requisite for ‘Up-Front’). For more details of these summer schools click here.

Education_Prospectus.pdf

Over the last two year’s I have grown up so much. When I first came to Chickenshed I was very insecure. I was nervous and found it hard to talk to people and had very little confidence. Now I feel confident and love being able to express myself and show what I am capable of. I feel I have grown as a person and am happy. I have changed and become someone I like.

I realised by being at Chickenshed how grateful I am to be given a life. Some people aren’t as fortunate as me to have family, friends and an able body. I have made many friends, people with different backgrounds, disabilities and know that everyone is special in their own way. I know I will take the experiences I have gained from Chickenshed to the places I go to in the future. Hopefully I can make a difference to people’s lives, just like you.
