Hackney Downs

Chickenshed worked in Downsview School, located in an area of high social and economic deprivation, in 1990 and 2001. As a result of our input, the borough’s SEN policy has been reworked as an inclusion policy.

“The confidence of all children improved. Two boys who were statemented for emotional and behavioural difficulties excelled. The co-operation and interaction between children of both schools was fantastic. Regardless of any inequality the children remained focussed and co-operative. The children worked together successfully and happily. They encouraged, helped, assisted and motivated each other to achieve their utmost. The most beneficial skills the children achieved from the project was the experience to appreciate and communicate with people of all abilities. It was a positive and rewarding experience for all.”
Jodie O’Connell, Nightingale Primary School, Hackney

“The children from our school as a group have often found difficulty in working collaboratively. This experience helped them to develop skills in that area and to use those skills effectively. The children felt part of the whole enterprise and responsible, in part, for it. The children worked together extremely well, all had great things to offer – some of our children who generally have low self-esteem received a great boost in confidence.”
P Cardis, Headteacher, Parkwood School, Hackney

This work lead to the formation of Hackney Shed, the third of our outreach projects to open to address with the ongoing needs of the area.
