Chickenshed greatly values the contribution made by volunteers and the enormous benefits it can bring to the work of the company.
In return, Chickenshed endeavours to provide volunteers with an experience which will enhance their own education and development.
As an inclusive company, Chickenshed strives to provide opportunities for everyone who wishes to offer their skills and services. Chickenshed also recognises that individual volunteers can offer different commitments as well as different skills. A simple application form and an informal interview enable us to find relevant volunteer placements which are appropriate to both the volunteer and the company.
We are keen to meet potential volunteers and to discover where they might fit into the organisation, and therefore a definitive list of volunteering opportunities is not possible. However, the following list of areas within which volunteering opportunities have been offered may be helpful:

Gardening
Bar Work
IT/Data inputting
In order not to disappoint potential volunteers we feel it important to be clear that there are certain areas in which we cannot involve volunteers. The main area where this is applicable is in rehearsals and performance with our Children’s and Youth Theatre. These are run and supported by our experienced and trained staff and volunteer involvement is not appropriate.
There are also highly skilled areas which are not appropriate for volunteer placements (e.g. Set/lighting and sound design are undertaken by professional designers on a contract basis), although, if you have any professional skills/training relevant to the theatre, please mention this on your application form.
During our Christmas productions there may be an opportunity for some volunteers to work backstage if this is an area of interest.
Chickenshed greatly respects its volunteers. Indeed, many members of permanent staff began their involvement with Chickenshed as volunteers – and for many years the founders of the company worked without payment. As a company we value our volunteers and full time staff equally.
