Young Creators is a professional development and training programme which offers young people the opportunity to experience the practical workings of a professional theatre in a variety of areas – and it’s free!
Young Creators Programme
Participants on the Young Creators programme will be offered workshops and talks in the following areas:
Creative Delivery | Directing | Writing | Devising | Children’s and Youth Theatre Direction | Lighting | Music Technology & Sound | Creative Composition & Musicianship | Dance & Choreography | Performances to Children | Wardrobe & Costume | Stage Management | Theatre Make-up | And more
The programme runs annually from September to July.

Young Creators Trainees
Participants on the Young Creators Trainee programme will be offered more intensive, advanced training as well as individual mentoring by staff who deliver the activities at Chickenshed. Through access to programmes across the performance, education and membership work of the company you will have the opportunity to develop skills in inclusive theatre practice within a range of environments and projects. Previous experience of the Young Creator programme is required before applying for the trainee position.
The timetable will be flexible and can work alongside other educational or employment activities. We ask for a commitment of 15 hours a week to this programme, and trainees will receive a bursary of £50 per week to cover expenses.
During this time the trainees will receive:
- Mentoring from an individual Chickenshed practitioner or technician relating to a development of your skills and how these transfer into a theatrical workplace.
- Opportunities to work within a creative team on professional theatre projects.
- Support to plan and deliver independent work within the Young Creators programme.
