On 3 November five members of Chickenshed’s Youth Theatre will be going on a weekend residential along with young people from other groups across Enfield and Harringey as part of London Youth’s YouthLeads programme.

YouthLeads is an exciting opportunity for a handful of our young people to exercise their skills in leadership, decision making, problem solving and creative thinking. The programme will see our five young leaders learn about project management and social action with a view to developing a project idea. What is so fantastic about the format of the programme is that we can place the process alongside a project that a wider group of our young people are taking part in. Chickenshed Young Company have chosen the (L)able project as a space for these five individuals to continue work with a broader group.

(L)able was a piece of theatre that was created by the Youth Theatre earlier this year as part of the New Routes Festival. (L)able considers how words can empower, identify, limit and separate, how societal norms manifest themselves in our judgement of others and whether we can, should or want to transcend our labels. After the success of the performance, the Young Company have decided to develop the piece further. The framework of YouthLeads requires project evaluation and self-reflection and the (L)able piece will benefit hugely from the input of the five Youth Theatre members who will apply what they have learned from YouthLeads to the project.

An opportunity for a transformative experience and some kind of growth for all participants is something that we ardently champion at Chickenshed, so to provide this space for the five young people we have invited to take part feels really progressive and relates to our inclusive ethos. We look forward to updating you on how our five young people progress on this fantastic programme!
