Chickenshed are delighted to be working with the Bo Ai School in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province, China on their upcoming production ‘The Lotus Lantern’.

The relationship with this extraordinary school for disadvantaged children began via London based production company Performance Infinity and their Chinese partners Jingying Theatre. Funding from the British Council’s Connections through Culture project has allowed us to develop original music, choreography and staging with undergraduates of the Hebei Institute of Communications who are training in Theatre in Education. In July a small team from Chickenshed will make their second visit to the school to oversee final preparations for the gala performance as well as spend time training the students of the Institute.

This project is part of an inter-cultural initiative to bring our inclusive approach to different environments. It is part of a two way process that explores not only how other cultures and communities can help us grow our understanding of inclusive practices, but also gives us the opportunity to bring our brand of theatre and creativity to participants that will never have experienced this style of performance before.

Chickenshed in China 2017 Chickenshed in China

The Bo Ai School works with impoverished girls and boys from rural communities. Students come from challenging backgrounds, so this will be a wonderful opportunity for them to experience a different approach to creativity that dovetails with the school’s mission to support and educate their pupils in a holistic way. In the run up to the show we will introduce methods of devising theatre that will give the students a sense of ownership over their performance. We will also help to train graduates of the Hebei Institute of Communications throughout the duration of the project.

Chickenshed’s previous projects in China have included working with mainstream and SEN children in Changsha and developing an environmental musical with young people in Xiamen. As with any Chickenshed project, we’ll be working with the Bo Ai School to ‘create together’ in a way that allows every voice to be heard.
