Dropping Pennies  by Sophie White

Just one of nine pieces combined to form monolog 3, our new selection of fresh writing from within the Chickenshed community. Showing at Chickenshed from 11 to 22 February.

'Dropping Pennies' tells the story of 22-year-old Penny Foxglove. When we meet her, she is presented as a vulnerable young woman, who is giving a statement to the police after an altercation with her long-term boyfriend leaves her with a head injury. Penny recalls when she first met "the love of her life" and takes the audience through the initial highs of their relationship, to when the cracks supposedly began to show. She also gives details about her difficult childhood with an alcoholic father, and how this links to her insecurities as an adult. The toxicity her relationship with her boyfriend becomes apparent as more truths begin to unravel and more pennies begin to drop...

The monologue explores themes of toxic relationships and how instances of domestic violence can continue from childhood. It also touches upon common misconceptions of the issue and questions the flawed ideology of 'guilty until proven innocent'.
