The Space Between Us - Living Letters

The Space Between Us Programme uses the power of devised theatre to reduce loneliness while (re)building communities and improving well-being. It is an intergenerational programme bringing together members of our inclusive Young Company and student groups with older people in our community. We currently have 153 members half of whom are particularly vulnerable at this challenging time.

There are many more isolated and lonely individuals across the country who would benefit from our support.

In response, we have developed Living Letters – an inspirational eight week letter-writing project, bringing together vulnerable and isolated older people with members of our Young Company.

About Living Letters

These intergenerational pairs are brought together through an on-line facilitated programme encouraging human connection and empathy - starting conversations, exploring histories and developing friendships that combat loneliness and isolation. Following a series of guided letter writing exercises the process culminates in the participants connecting with their partner, via on-line video chats.

We have already seen that strong relationships are enabled to flourish, with our ambition for meaningful and important connections continuing long after lockdown finishes. This powerful approach has the opportunity to build worthwhile and purposeful relationships for vulnerable individuals right across the UK.
