Less Than Six Weeks Until Marathon Day!

As 22 April looms we checked in with Jess, one of our amazing London Marathon runners, to see how she’s finding the process.

While I was watching the London Marathon last year on TV, I knew straightaway that I wanted to be on that start line in 2018 so I emailed Julie, the Community Development Manager at Chickenshed, to put my name down - before the elite runners had even finished their race! For the past five years I’ve wanted to run the London Marathon (four unsuccessful ballot entries) but also run in aid of a charity that means a lot to me, so this has been an amazing opportunity as I also managed to rope in a family friend of mine so we could fundraise and train together.

In February, it was lovely to meet some of the members of Team Chickenshed and hear some very poignant personal stories about running. Having been a past member for over ten years, Chickenshed has always carried a special place in my heart as I have so many happy and exciting memories from my time there. As well as growing in confidence and developing skills I wouldn’t have had an opportunity to gain elsewhere, I have always admired and loved Chickenshed’s ethos, inclusivity and acceptance, and as a local Enfield girl, I know how important they are to both the local and wider community.

Chickenshed has always carried a special place in my heart

My family friend works for the emergency services and I myself am training to be a nurse, so we’ve both had to be very disciplined with our training and learn to juggle fundraising and training with shift work and a lot of studying, something that I have found challenging but still very rewarding. When I’m on placement, I’m used to getting up at 5.30am so it’s no different really getting up on days off for a run. I try to get up early when I can and run as it starts the day off well and gets my training out of the way for the busy day ahead. We are less than 6 weeks away until Marathon Day and a few days away from our main fundraising event which is a Charity Quiz Night & Raffle at a local Enfield venue. It never ceases to amaze me how brilliant and generous local residents, businesses, friends and family can be as we have had so many people come forward to support us in the Quiz Night's organisation, attendance and the 20 raffle prizes we’ve received, which has far exceeded our expectations for the four or five raffle little prizes we thought we’d get.

I am getting nervous butterflies as we get closer to 22 April but being able to run for a charity I know so well and love whilst running alongside a close friend of mine and undertaking a big personal fitness and endurance challenge has been a great experience, and the day will definitely be an emotional one for all of us.
