Chickenshed was delighted to be approached by BBC Radio 4 in May this year asking if they could feature our theatre company on their hugely popular programme The Reunion. You can listen to the show here.

The Reunion is a fantastic radio series that reunites a group of people intimately involved in a moment of modern history. We were so thrilled to hear that the producer and researcher of the show had read Chickenshed’s 40th Anniversary Book, An Awfully Big Adventure written by Liz Thompson, and wanted to reunite the founders, Mary Ward and Jo Collins with some of the young people that were involved in the early years of our history.

The producers made contact with many of our members and listened to their stories before deciding upon the six people they wanted to feature in the programme. Simon Callow, our wonderful supporter, ambassador and friend, happily agreed to take time out of his massively busy schedule to join the guests on the sofa. Simon has first-hand knowledge of our work, as his godson Peter was a member of Chickenshed from a very young age. He passionately believes that Peter’s life was changed by his involvement at Chickenshed. Peter became a valuable and proficient performer and learnt many skills from working backstage as a member of the production team, but most of all, he learned how to work inclusively and with people from all different walks of life.

BBC Radio 4 have said that they found it very, very difficult to choose who would be ‘reunited’ on the programme as our journey spans 44 years with literally thousands of people coming through our doors every week.

We are all very excited to hear the finished programme for the first time, which airs on Sunday 2 September at 11.15 am on BBC Radio 4.

We are so thankful to David Prest, the producer who chose to feature Chickenshed and especially to Karen Pirie who worked tirelessly over many months to find her studio guests to bring together. Huge thanks must also go to Sue MacGregor, the presenter of this very special show, who said that she thoroughly enjoyed the three hours spent in the studio with the guests. Be sure to have a listen and tweet us your favourite memories of Chickenshed throughout the show!
